X-Cart allows you to pass options in the URL to a cart page - see this thread for more information.
As you will see in the thread, to do something similar to a product page would require customization.

Felikz, I advise you to have a look at our Ecwid solution (http://www.ecwid.com)
It seems to be the best fit for your situation (existing site, do not want to change it, need add to cart button and product options).

Ambal, Ecwid looks fantastic and I'll certainly be saving that for later. You're completely right in what we're looking for however we were looking to utilise much more than just the cart side of X-Cart (linking it in with iDev Affiliate and a few other bits) so I'm going to have a much closer look into the link that gb2world sent through. The good news is that it looks like X-Cart will be a good fit for us.

Thanks to everyone for their help, I think I now have the information I need to start having a play to see if I can get this working.
