Default UPS Shipping

Still Evaluating XC5 and I am having some trouble with shipping.
I generally ship through UPS. My current site automatically connects to UPS to obtain the shipping cost for each on line order. UPS uses the box size and weight to determine the cost.

In XC4 when you setup a product you can enter a weight and package size for each item. When an order is placed this information is sent to UPS and a rate is returned. In XC5 weight is easy but I can only enter a package size when an item is marked Separate Box. This seems to present a problem when multiple different items are ordered. Three different items will get shipping with the cost of three boxes.

It is hard to believe XC would do away with the shipping fields without having an alternative but I do not seem to be able to overcome the inflated shipping costs.

How does everyone else handle shipping of multiple different items to obtain the correct shipping charge?

Default Re: UPS Shipping

I think the logic behind it is if you enter box dimensions it means the product ships on its own.
The UPS module will pack all products in cart and calculate in multiple boxes based on weight and box dimensions from the module's settings. I guess it is assumed if you want to enter box dimensions on product level that product ships in its own box with its own shipping cost.
If you add box dimensions for all products but they still ship together in one box what's the purpose of the dimensions? The cart will still ignore them as what matters in this case is total weight and default box dimensions and the service.
I could be wrong but it seems irrelevant to me to have box dimensions on product level unless you intend to ship the product separately from the others in cart.

Thanks Steve, that explains their logic.

Unfortunately it does not work in real life at least based on my experience. Currently the interaction between XC4 and UPS is spot on with the rates based on box size and weight. XC5 will overstate the rate based on ship separately (which you would expect) but understates the rate without the box dimensions. XC5 will use the box size entered in the UPS setup which is not always the box size used for a particular order.

There may be a workaround but I have not found it yet.
