Seem like you are looking for the cat that the product belongs to?

the way that i have it set up is

main category > sub category > product
the product is listed only in the sub category, so $product.categoryid returns the sub category
i'm looking to return the main category

thry this will leave the root cat for any cat or sub cat

i'm not getting that to show up.
it seems like the only category related variables within {$product} is categoryid
