I'd imagine 4.4 is going to be drastically different - at least it looks like it will be. You will probably be able to upgrade the db, but not the templates and php files.

Only database can be upgraded between branches. Store front you have to do again

Today, max tomorrow

Really we do not want to roll out beta with obvious bugs, so we are performing additional testing and preparing beta-version release at the same time. Trying to be very careful as despite of all warnings there will be someone who will start building their web-site on v4.4 beta

Depends on beta testing results. I invite everyone to take part. More bugs found on beta testing stage, more bugs eliminated before official release.
