Default reason for slow site

How can i check what is the reason for my site to load one day 2 sec and other day 6-8 sec, which is very slow.
I'm using EWD as a host . From reading here and talking to them, i understand it has nothing to do with them.

Thanks

have a look on the http://tools.pingdom.com website. This will give you a waterfall look on your website so you can see what parts are taking longer to load than others.

If you're testing the same page each time, the results should normally be around the same if they're going through a single source. If you're also loading from 3rd party services (live chat, comodo graphics, trust seals, imports of tweets etc), then this can slow down display too.

Verify that you have the extended stats logging disabled in X-Cart also, this will help.

Can you ask EWD to find out the loading time of the page from the server level? In shared hosting, without truly isolated environments, the actions of another user on the same machine can cause slowdowns for another user on the same server.

The other slowdown factor would be if one day you had 20 visitors on the site and the other day you had 100 or 200 visitors loading pages. These will all factor in as loading issues.

Under normal circumstances, when a page loads at one speed one time, and then another speed lateron, that usually points back at the host. EWD is pretty good about being on top of things X-Cart related, so if they're saying that it's definitely not server related, then that's usually pretty good. You just need to make sure that when someone says it's not server related, that they are actually also evaluating server load conditions and processes that were running at the same time of the tests.

Did they have any input on what they thought it might be?

Thanks Conor.

I did not think about some of the points you raised and i will check with EWD again and see what they have to say.

I need some help with my site...........it loads so slow. I used the speed test tool at http://tools.pingdom.com and it took over 13 seconds.
I have tried the following with no luck
1. reduced the size of my images
2. turned off advanced stats tracking

I tried to use the speed up tool but I'm not sure what file to modify after I click the "check" boxes

my site is www.dunestarracing.com

Dunestar, lets open a new thread on this.
Off hand, looking at the pingdom check, it looks like your images are being called from the database and not the file system. You'll want to change that.

Open up a new discussion thread on this and I'll be happy to go through our site with you.

Conor,

I've been monitoring my site for the last 5 days with the tool you sent me to. Most time the result are between 2.04 to 3.63. I did have one 5.54 sec.
So it's not so bad as it looks in Google webmaster. (why google see other results?)

However, i do not understand all the parameters there to make the site speed better. I got 2 main issues to fix and they are:

the Leverage browser caching and
the Serve static content from a cookieless domain.

Is there anything i can do with these two that you can recommend me?

Appreciate your respond.

You can create a new subdomain e.g. http://static.yourdomain.com/ and further change the script to use that static domain for static content e.g.: images, css, scripts, etc.
