Question

As per the title is there a way that I can make specific items visible to every visitor but only specific people can purchase them.

The reason I ask is it is for custom design shirts that I would like all to get idea of the work but only the person who the shirt is for can buy it.... sort of like a intelligent gallery I guess

Or if not wish list i guess

This sounds similar to what the Call For Price module does, except that Call For Price disables the purchase of particular products completely (i.e. you should handle it offline): http://www.x-cart.com/extensions/addons/call-for-price.html

good addition but now quite up to what im after
could do with it possibly similar but have the additional option to enable sale to specific member group or even member direct while every one else has the "Call For Price" or "Private Order" message

Not really but it can be custom coded. And the module Alex referred to is for XC5

It looks like you need something like "Request a quote" button, not the "Call for price" one. So that after a customer clicks the button and describes what he wants he/she receives an e-mail from the store with the purchase link.

Here's a possible workaround until a better one comes along.
1. Create the public catalog item with a zero quantity.
2. Clone the catalog item.
3. Set it up as "Hidden but available for sale."
4. Enter the quantity available in the cloned item.
5. Privately provide the clone's link only to authorized customers.

Too much messing around especially when I cant keep the store stable at present but thanks for the idea
