Wishful thinking ???

Here's what I did:

using phpmyadmin I created a copy of my current stores database and change my sites config file to use the new database.
I then logged into admin and applied the 4.1.9 to 4.1.11 sql patches to the copied database.

Then I put my config file back to its normal settings so I don't have to worry about the current store having problems.

I then created a new directory http://mysite.com/new and began the install process for 4.1.11 (new install) I simply set it to use a current database instead of creating one.

I now have a full version of 4.1.11 installed, using my current data, with no obvious problems and I'm ready to do the update_sql patch for 4.2.

It only took me about 30 minutes to do the whole thing.

Thanks

FYI, skins are inportant. Light and lucid sucks - means unacceptable. We hope these things don't take months. They should have been available at release.

I suspect I'll stay with 4.1.11 a while, but I have to be honest. The apple has lost some of it's shine.

You guys have heard the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" right? I'm always curious as to why people are so eager to jump on the latest release of something, particularly when it is as painful an upgrade as this one will be. If your 4.1.x cart is working well for you and you are happy with it, why upgrade? Honestly unless there is a feature you can't live without (dimensional shipping, pre-auth), upgrading really isn't going to gain you anything you can't achieve with a third-party add-on.

LOL It's miles better than the old default skins.

I'm sure someone told that to the guys who can't figure out how to get their old sql databases to upgrade to the new 4.2.

I'd like to stay current with the technology so that I'm not so far behind the 8 ball that it's impossible to catch up.

I just want to spend my time operating my business - not re-installing and reconfiguring my store weeks after I bought it.

Maybe an example is in order. I have very little respect for the Windows operating system - but for the most part, it has always been backwards compatible. We lost that today in X-Cart

Regarding backward compatibility. Sometimes, developers have to dump the old code and start fresh, and that may mean leaving previous versions at a dead end. That's what apple did with with os x. They had to leave previous generations of their OS in the dust. And that's probably what Microsoft should have done with windows.

Everyone wants x-cart improved, but then when it's improved, everyone complains. Yes, it's disappointing when you just installed the previous version of x-cart and now there is a shiney new version. But as many have pointed out, unless there is a feature you can't live without, continue to use the old version.

I am very happy that x-cart now has a css-based template. Just the other day I needed to modify buttom.tpl. What a nightmare of tables that is. Nested table code is so confusing to work with. I am excited that I no longer have make extensive mods to templates to remove the tortuous table code each time I install x-cart.

Hi,

Remember, this product is a means to an end, making money! the customers don't care which version you are using, does it work? yes, fine.

We will use 4.1.* for some time yet!

You should stay with 4.1.11 for a while. Just because 4.2 has been released doesn't mean you have to upgrade immediately, if at all. As has been said, unless there is something that you absolutely need that is in 4.2, then there is no need to upgrade.

A word about skins... Since x-cart costs around $200 it is a very inexpensive yet very powerful e-commerce solution. It is my understanding that the developers of x-cart are going to be leaning more towards developing add-ons and skins for present x-cart customers as a way of making a profit from their endeavors.

There are also third-party developers that produce add-ons and skins for x-cart, and I am sure that over time you will be able to get pretty much anything you can right now for 4.2 that you can get for prior releases of x-cart.

One ongoing problem seems to be with people that purchase x-cart, attempt to modify it without really knowing what they are doing, and then come to this forum trying to undo what they have done. Many are here to help, but it does get tiresome when you see the same questions, and the same mistakes, made time and again. Perhaps the new release will help to eliminate some of these people by not being as simple to edit, making them choose instead to get professional help. Only time will tell.

The CSS-based skin should actually make it EASIER to edit.
