Although I am happy with the overall changes to 4.2, I'm not thrilled at all about the upgrade process.

In order to upgrade from 4.1.9 to 4.2 we have to completely upgrade to 4.1.11 first, then do a database upgrade, then we can install 4.2

Our site, like a lot of other peoples, is highly customized, so upgrading to any version isn't exactly a quick process.

All I want to do is upgrade the database so I don't have to redo that too.

Any idea why they don't have sql update packages between more than just 4.1.11 and 4.2

JWAIT: how do u edit ur templates then??

I always edit the template or php file using a text editor (PSPad) and rename (template.tpl-new) then upload it via ftp, and change the name to the original template or filename.

As for keeping your 4.1.11 version, I would most certainly. I have just begun working with 4.2 and can tell it will be quite some time before we are ready to go "live" with it. In the meantime 4.1.11 works just fine.

Now that 4.2 is here, does this mean that those of us who have pre 4.2 versions cannnot expect to receive any more improvements from Qualiteam? For example, would we ever see dimensional shipping added to 4.1?

I just opened in September. I am a little disappointed that I may have a product that will not see any more improvements, and that I cannot upgrade to a version that will see future improvements.

I understand Xcart moving to CSS. Great for the people who have yet to buy. It is a great improvement. I would also understand if they abandon the 4.1 and earlier versions, but it is just frustrating.

For the experts out there, how would you make the switch? Do you get a second hosting account and start from scratch and build a new store? I am just wondering how the experienced would go from 4.1 to 4.2, if they wanted to.

Thanks
Rob

Joe,

I am in EXCACTLY the same situation as you.

I did not upgrade to 4.1.10 as it was causing all kinds of errors, and I simply didn't have time then to troubleshoot.

When .11 came, I thought about it, then decided to wait... I have upgraded from 4.1.3 all the way, at every increment, and the 4.1.9 upgrade took all the spirit out of me... when .10 failed after a half dozen attempts (and I'm VERY good at doing upgrades), I walked...

SO -- now, with 4.2, I will be starting over, and building a new skin and new mods -- but if the database can't easily migrate, I don't know what my plan will be.

I was not able to bring my store to .11 -- otherwise I'd be there by now.

Please let me know what you discover. I'm watching this thread...

Just upgrade your database to 4.1.11, then use that database for a new install of 4.1.11. From there you can upgrade to 4.2.0.

That is my dilemma!
How do I do that without doing a full upgrade?

There are files with the extension sql in the upgrade packs just import them in phpmyadmin or the SQL Patch section of the Patch/Upgrade section of your shop admin area.

I am in the same boat as well. I work on linux servers for a living but I watch the nightmares unfold in the forum as people upgrade and get stuck for days. I have chosen to stay on 4.1.9 as well and hoped there would be an easy way to just upgrade the DB to .11, export the data file and get on with the 4.2.

Wishful thinking ???

I noticed on the Xcart site there are no longer any templates available, and as no one would use the basic template it ships with, does this mean the cost of a custom skin is also required?

From the announcement:

Quote:
There are no skins for 4.2 but the integrated css-based Light&Lucid yet. We plan to adapt a couple of popular 4.1's commercial skins and make them available to X-Cart 4.2 users, but it will take pretty much time due to making them css-based.
