Re: X-Cart 4.2 beta testing
I am currently running 4.1.9, without any troubles.
From the looks of 4.2, I am definitely going to upgrade. Would it be easier to simply pull the product database from our old store and put it in the new version, or will that even be possible. I would simply reskin the new install to meet our needs. I would like to do this because we have a large number of mods that may no longer be needed, so instead of going through all the trouble to remove them, it may just be easier to make 4.2 look like my current 4.1.9 site.

Re: X-Cart 4.2 beta testing
More than likely there will be a database upgrade patch at some point. The one thing to check is the mods you are planning on keeping as they may not be usable with the new release.
For us, there is one mod that is critical. It is the"Added Order Status w/ emails" which we use in conjunction with the X-AOM module. The rest of the mods we have we probably don't need, except for some sort of SEO module (which I think will be standard in 4.2 if I remember correctly). We will not be upgrading until we can confirm that we will still be able to use that mod. One thing to be aware of is that most mods have modified your database, and it would probably be best to remove those entries in your database before doing any upgrade. What might work best is to use a standard install (no mods) of your current version of x-cart, checking the standard database against what you are presently using and removing the alterations to the tables performed by the mods, making sure that everything is working properly with the standard install on your new database. Then upgrade a copy of that database.

Re: X-Cart 4.2 beta testing
Please also keep in mind that usually a new branch of X-cart takes a while before it gets stable and before it is recommended to be used for live sites. Over 6 years of us working with X-cart, it usually takes about 6-9 months before they were considered stable. We saw many clients insist on jumping into 4.1.x and got burnt because of the initial bugs. So please do a lot of testing on the new version before you decide if you want to go live with the new branch of software. We though usually recommend waiting about 6 months atleast.
For example, with 4.0.x, if my memory serves me right, it was 4.0.12 that was the first to be considered "stable" in that branch. So it took 12 revisions. And for 4.1.x it was 4.1.9 that was considered "stable" by x-cart. Just keep this in mind. I see a lot of people really exited and want to make sure everyone knows that it may not be ready for live sites right away. Nothing against X-cart or anything like that. It's just a fact of any new branch of software. It takes a bit for bugs to get worked out and for the developers to consider it stable. Carrie

Thanks for that info. That post pretty much says that I was headed in the right direction with my plans. I was going to go take a look at the beta, but it looks at though it has been taken down.
