If I have 4.4.3 that code has been modified by programmers will 4.4.4 upgrade ruin all of that work that I paid for?

Most likely yes, depending on what code has been modified in your 4.4.3 installation. You would need to manually patch the files that have been modified in order for the upgrade to work.
