TaxJar for v4

With what is going to be a huge change in the landscape for all of us US based stores, is there any chance of a TaxJar module for v4? I have been doing some preliminary research today, and it would appear that TaxJar offers a nearly if not totally identical service to Avalara's Avatax. However, while TaxJar is up front and open about their pricing, Avalara completely hides all pricing which is probably for good reason. If their pricing was better, they would list it.

What are everyone's thoughts and plans for sales tax compliance in the near future? What a way to ruin a weekend...

Well this is still not 100% but most likely it will be approved and forced into a law. It still need to pass Congress.

As for module - I had one for XC5 then it turns out QT themselves were working on one and released it for free. They get kick back from every subscription signup so they can afford free module.

So now unless it will be custom coded module specifically for you I don't think anyone will code one. You will have to wait on QT to release TaxJar module for XC4 and hope it will be free.

When I was working on the TaxJar module (and actually I did use it and worked great) this is the same observation I had about pricing and that's why I choose them. Straight forward pricing model, open and without any surprises. Also as far as I know - cost is way less than Avalara.

I agree that it will probably be approved and forced into law, which was kind of the purpose of starting this discussion. Maybe bringing attention to it will push QT to work on a module for v4 (wishful thinking).

I personally haven't ventured down the path just yet. TaxCloud looks to cost a small fortune... However, I would love to hear from anyone as well regarding their tax compliance adventures.

Being a small niche business it looks like we're going to be under the thresholds of each state for 2019. I exported my 2018 US orders and put in excel, sorted by state, and then totaled both number of orders and total price including shipping. It looks like some states include the cost of shipping and some don't.

Sounds like there's a need for a time saving mod I'd pay for. Steve??

In some states shipping is taxable, for others not. Some states will tax shipping for certain type of products only or under certain conditions.
When shipping is taxable it will be included in the total threshold for the state.

In my opinion TaxJar is the way to go right now.
Avalara is extremely expensive and not open to what they charge.
TaxCloud while free for certain states looks like is having issues - I almost always have issues loading their website, it is slow and just not looking good.

Without knowing there will be definite ROI I am hesitated to code TaxJar module for XC4 just to find out QT includes it for free with next minor/major release. As they did with XC5.
Especially with the very small now and shrinking XC4 customer base.

When I originally had made this post, I also contacted QT directly. Max responded with, "At the moment we are not going to implement such integration for v4". I know that isn't probably set in stone, but maybe it would be worth your while (and everyone else's) if you toyed around with the possibility?
