Extra fields character limit issue - please help

Default Extra fields character limit issue - please help
I created an extra field for my products, but realized that the text in that field caps at 255. I went into the DB and changed the structure of the extra field from 'char' to 'text' but it didn't solve the issue. It keeps cutting what i enter in that field. Does anyone know how to get extra fields to display as much text as i want?
