I know I posted something similar to this earlier...but got no responses. So in an effort to be clearer, here goes....

I want to use a background button image or mini-cell for my main category menu. Can anyone please tell me where and how to edit the necessary template?

I think my advice might need to be corrected...but in the meanwhile...
I think you need to check the CSS class related to that category
and apply a background image.

If you use the webmaster mode, and hover over what u want to modify,
it will tell you it's location.

Use webmaster mode within admin to locate the tpl to modify.

Are you using a standard setup like xcart's online demo? Or does the menu look/perform differently?

It's pretty standard. My question is, what template? categories.tpl? and how do I make this change to use a background img or cell for category listings?

It maybe skin1/customer/categories.tpl . Again, you should use webmaster mode to make life easier for yourself.

It maybe a little difficult to say what to edit without seeing some HTML for your menus.
