I'm trying to get the newest products to display first on the homepage along with the date they were added. I thought this would be a standard option, but I can't find a way to get it to work without doing some heavy modding to a bunch of files

Does anyone know how to do this, for free preferably? I found this product, which may do the job http://www.websitecm.com/x-cart-mods/newest-added-products-for-xcart.html . Anybody know anything about it?

Not possible by default, the mod is your best bet.
