I need to add javascript to menu_manufacturers.tpl, but each time I add it there's a smarty error on the store front.

The javascript itself is fine.

How does one add javascript to a template?

You usually need to put your code between
{literal} code {/literal} tags. You should find plenty of examples like this in the forum if you need some more help.
