Default Browsers: At what point does it look awful?

OK, in an attempt to have Webmaster Mode open and also have me logged in as customer to see the changes, I fired up my trusty Netscape 4.6...whoa, ugly!

Having come from a cgi driven cart that looked and performed fine in Netscape 3 , it's a bit of a leap of faith upgrading to X-Cart. Are there any ticks or trips for getting X-cart to look OK in *slightly* older browsers?

I'm still not convinced that it's only a very small and dispensable minority of users that have older bowsers that don't support X-Cart features (incl. use of Javascript) -I don't want to lose any custom if I can help it! On the other hand, I don't feel that X-Cart is too "bleeding edge" (as Jakob Nielsen would put it), and is probably on par with the ubiquitous Os-Commerce which seems to look just as bad in Netscape 4.6!

What are people's thoughts on this? Also, has anyone run any usability type tests/focus groups on X-Cart before unleashing it to the public? Just wondering how it conforms to good shopping cart usability design (is it intuitive for newbie web users etc?).

Thanks

Dan

who still uses NS3??

i read like 90% of the world is on IE 5+ or NS7+.

something like that.

personally, i think your wasting your time trying to code for a NS3/4 browser.

just my .02

Well NS3 I think I can safely abandon, but Netscape 4 was kind of around when everyone started buying PC's a few years back and the Internet was getting more accessible through the likes of Freeserve (I'm thinking UK here). I think you're proabably right though, be nice to see some definitive stats though -I know there are websites with browser usage stats but do any of you get customers contact you with older browser related issues?

NS3/4 account for 0.6% of usage in June 04.

Interesting stats though, looks as though NN4 is a bit dead in the water now. The only thing that concerns me out of that lot is the Javascript statistic, especially the number that have it turned off, although this has been discussed before on this forum.

Another thing I wanted to ask, seen as I don't have them installed, how does X-Cart look/function on AOL and opera -no problems I take it?

I think I can sleep easier now!

Thanks

Dan

We had a few customers tell us they were having problems viewing our site on AOL but I checked it out with my own AOL and it seemed to work just fine. Anyone else having this problem?
