the default posistion for the search box is at the top of the page but I'd prefer it to be in the left hand column. How'd I move it?

Just put this code where ever you want the search to appear (and either comment out or delete this existing code in head.tpl).

{if $usertype eq "C"}
{ include file="customer/search.tpl" }
{/if}

If you need to change the look of the search, just edit search.tpl
