Just wondering how to separate the categories with vertical lines in the categories menu?

I mean the main categories menu on the home page left hand side

Do you mean horizontal lines? You can simply add a border to the class that controls the category listing. Use Firebug to determine which one it is.

anyways can i add borders to flyout menus?

any useful threats on moving the categories menu from the left to the top bar to be displayed horizontally (i got that right didn't i )
