I still have not been able to get this to work.

Also, a new issue. I need to remove the ability to rate items from the store.

By rate do you mean the stars or do you mean the stars and the reviews?

If you mean just the stars, go into admin > module > click configure on customer reviews (i think thats what it is called) > turn off ratings



if you mean both the stars and the reviews, simply disable the customer review module.
