My client has a store using 4.1 (not sure how to find the exact dist. no. in their admin) and they want a new design.

Naturally, I downloaded the latest files for the design, because I didn't have access to their admin at the time. I've finished working on it, using the latest 4.3 download, but I just found out they have a 4.1 store.

I'd like to talk them into upgrading, but if not, will the new template files break in an older version of x-cart?

Shouldn't this have been your first port of call by determining which version.. (This has to be determined before any design and not to design making assumptions) Not Good..

Sorry but I wouldn't spend weeks designing then to find woops designed for wrong version...


Also just a thought, if you have a license all files no matter what version you have should be in your file area, no need to go to customers area.
Most developers would have a license anyway for development.

I do have a license, and it doesn't take me weeks to customize a front end (thank goodness). I was just wondering because I had originally planned to convince them to upgrade anyway.

I don't like using old versions of anything, so that's why I didn't design for 4.1 - it's against my own in-house rules actually. I'd rather tell them (for sure, not guessing) that their website will break without an upgrade, but if in fact it will be fine, then I don't want to give them the wrong info.

Thanks for answering my question though. Since it won't break anything, I won't worry too much if they get stingy and don't want the upgrade. I just don't feel comfortable letting them keep the old version is all.

No I Mean Definitely not (As in using 4.3 files on 4.1) So the answer is yes of course it will break it..... (The files etc will be completely different, this is obvious surely.

Nothing to do on topic, but when I design I designed from new really and make sure all is cross browser etc and I am a bit of a perfectionist.

Yep I can knock up a design change in a day, if they want basic changes, I am talking a unique overall design change in all areas.......

Got it, thanks for clearing that up.

I know what you mean, but my plan is to upgrade them. I've already cross browser tested, and customized everything throughout, so all is good. Takes me a week tops (but I don't do the Fast Lane Checkout mod) to fully customize a site - that's just coding AND adding content/pages and cross browser testing, not design concepts. I'm a bit of a workaholic LOL! (a geek really). Thanks for your help!


Just realized too that I couldn't have downloaded the 4.1.9 files from my own licenses anyway (mine are newer) because they are not there. I just checked, and all I can download are Updates, no core x-cart distributions that old. SO, I just sent a message to them telling them they have to get their original developer to upgrade them from 4.1.9 or hire X-cart. I'm not going to be responsible for this one (they have some customizations involved)...
