If Statement for Index and Category Pages

I am trying to make a script show up on my left nav. only on the Index and Category pages. would i use a statement similar to

Code:

{if $main eq "xxxxxxx"}

I currently us CDSEO for my category pages. The all have the directory name CATEGORY in common.

Hope someone out there can help.

Try:

{if $main eq "catalog"}
