Default Related Products Clone?

Hi everyone,

I'm attempting to create a new module that is basically a copy of the related products feature and call it Required Accessories. I want it to have the same functionality and work side by side with my current related products module. I'm pretty new to php coding and such, but I just can't seem to figure out what exactly needs to be changed.

So far I've been able to create a copy of the upselling function, but if I do any sort of editing I can't even get it to display. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Can someone at least point me in what direction I need to go to make this section have it's own data set instead of using the one from related products?

Upselling Links (Related Products) uses both templates and PHP. Are you saying that you cloned both and named them "required_accessories.php" and "required_accessories.tpl? Besides that you will need to change (or duplicate) the references to "related products" wherever you want the "required accessories" to appear, in product.tpl for example. Also, since they are "required" you need some method of "forcing" the customer to buy them. Are you sure you would be better off making your "required accessories" options of the product? It just seems simpler to me that way (unless there are dozens of "required" accessories).

an example of what we have, our site sells roofing parts such as gutters and gutter accessories. gutters require a shipping box and gutter length is specified in the quantity box. so we can't force the shipping box on them in the cart page because it would charge them over and over for the length they choose.

Since the gutter is probably "oversize" for normal (UPS, FedEx, etc.) shipping methods you probably use a "freight" carrier, correct? If so, you probably need to look into the "Shipping Charges" section of x-cart and define a rate based on the size and weight of the item. The carrier will probably charge the same for 1 item as 10 because of the size. For instance, USPS will charge 15 Lbs for a 4 Lbs item if the box is over a specified size. I'm sure your carrier probably does the same thing. We don't ship any items that require "freight" shipping so I'm not sure how to go about setting it up, but it should be in the manual. I hope this helps.
