custom data not displayed in admin order notification email | |||

I am working on a 4.4.5 Gold site and have been trying to complete a customization through which some additional data is displayed in the invoice, by using some available smarty variables in the screen invoice page and modifying the order_data.tpl file (in the webmaster console). This data is displayed in the screen invoice after the checkout is completed, but it is not displayed in the admin notification email. The owner of the site has informed me that it is displayed in the customer's notification email. Any tips why would the data not display in the admin notification email? As far as I know, the order_invoice.tpl and order_data.tpl are the common templates that render the screen invoice and the order notification emails, both to admin and to customer. So, whatever you add in those 2 template files, they should supposedly show in the notification emails. Could it be that the admin notification email is sent at a stage where the above mentioned smarty variables are still not populated with any data? I appreciate any tips.
