As you'll note in the upper right of the site (on the gold bar) I have placed a link to login and register pages. The problem with this is that it's a static link and so those links will be there even if a customer is already logged in... this (of course) could be confusing to a customer.

What I'd like to do is remove the "hello customer" from the front page and put it up in place of the links on the bar when a customer is logged in & show the login / register links when they are not.

Additionally I don't want it to say "hello customer" on the traditional place on the front page when the person is logged in.

Could someone assist me in figuring out what bits of code have to go where to make this goal achievable?

Since it appears you want login on a separate page, why didn't/don't you choose to do that in the security options in general settings? It pretty much does what you are asking (you will have to modify the "[username] is logged in" text that appears before the "logout" button once a customer is logged in).
