and now most of the store is having issues - when i try to add a product to the basket or click any event button like submit to register nothing happens except the far left hand corner shows error on page. Any way to step through code and see where the error is?

I'd try undoing what you did one step at a time. If you weren't making backups (you should ALWAYS backup) you can find the original files in teh skin1_original directory.

well i had a few backups but just went in and restored to the original and did some cutting and pasting...phew
