Default No0b needs help with storefront.

I have been working on this site for almost a year now. I originally had a designer working on it (My Cousin) after I paid him he kind of bailed out on me. So I have been Forest Gumping my way through making my site look the way I want. Along the way I have come across some issues and here are 3 of them.

1) There used to be a spot on the home page where I could change text through webmaster mode. I put some information there and decided it was better suited to go in the about us page.

So I cut and pasted the information to the about us spot. When I did that I lost the spot on the home page where I could edit text through webmaster mode. I have looked for files and folders on both my Server and the Xcart but I have not been able to find what I am looking for.

I did however find one spot where I could enter text and it was in the location.tpl but now this text is on every page even in my admin area. I can not edit it in webmaster mode so I know this is not the right spot for this text It is more of a short term solution for a long term problem.

I am sure there is a simple solution for this. Can anyone help?

2) In the spot where I do have the text that I do not want I would rather there be manufacturers logos that I am franchised to sell. I have seen this done on other sites and I was wondering if this was easily done.

3) Where it says Categories, Manufacturers, users online Ect Ect.. Well I have new images to replace them with that go along with the rest of the site. How do I change them?

If anyone is kind enough to help me please make the information very step by step,

My site is www.pctechtoys.com thank you in advance,
Mike

Hey Mike, let me see if I can help you out:

1 & 2. You want to edit customer/main/welcome.tpl. That is the page that is displayed on the home page only. If you nuked some of the language variables, you can always find the original template in the skin1_original folder. You can use regular html in there as well, so go ahead and add logos to your heart's content

3. Are you talking about the headers of the menu boxes on the side? Do you want the same background for each or will they all be unique?

Balinor,

Thank you for your reply. although I was able to find the customer/main/welcome.tpl. file I was not able to find the skin1_original folder.

The only skins I found were skin1.conf, skin1.ccs, skin1_admin.ccs and skin1_printable.ccs I may need a little more help on where to find that folder.

(3. Are you talking about the headers of the menu boxes on the side? Do you want the same background for each or will they all be unique?)

Yes the headers of the menu boxes on the side. I have a unique background for each box. Is this easy to change?

You will have to get to the skin1_original folder via FTP outside of X-Cart.

To make each menu box unique, you need to create a unique menu.tpl for each of them. Can be a little bit of work, especially if you aren't familar with the templates.

Balinor,

Once again thank you. I have come to the conclusion that for me to that the headers the way I want them I am probably going to have to pay someone to do it.

However the other thing I can probably fix on my own. I have found the skin1_original folder in my FTP. 0f the 60 or so files that are in there would you happen to know what file I would need to correct?

Thanks again

I am looking at this a little closer... Do you think it may be in the dialog_message.tpl?

Your skin1_original folder is a replica of your skin1 folder, only untouched. When you install x-cart it takes this folder and makes the skin1 folder from it, allowing you to then alter the templates, but with a backup in place.

You can actually restore files from the Edit templates section. You can either reinstall all the templates, or each individual one by clicking on the template, then at the bottom will be a Restore button.

If you use FTP, you should see the same folder structure as you do for skin1 and there should be more than 60 files!
So you should be able to go in and find subfolders customer/main and the file welcome.tpl if this is the one that needs fixing. As I say, you don't need to use ftp to do this. It is designed so that you can start again if you make a mistake.

If welcome.tpl isn't the file you want, you can use webmaster mode, which you are familiar with to find the correct template you need. Then just Restore it or replace it using ftp.

Yes, but if you want to keep SOME of your info on the welcome.tpl template, don't hit restore or you will nuke it all! That is why I suggested the FTP method.

Ok.. I tried just about everything. maybe I didn't explain myself as good as I should have. When I first loaded Xcart there used to be a message there saying

Welcome to PC TechToys
Then underneath it gave a description something on the lines of

This is a shopping cart powered by Xcart there are no real products...Ect...Ect...

I was able to edit this in webmaster mode until I took out all the text and put it someplace else.

I did notice that when I want to edit text through WM mode it allows me to edit a lbl. file. These files I can not find anywhere. For instance If I want to edit "Welcome to" in webmaster mode I click on it and it brings up a lbl.welcome_to file. The address it points to is www.pctechtoys.com - label dialog - microsoft....

Is there a place these files are located and if not why? You would think that I would be able to edit text freely in the template files with out having to go through WM mode.
