Default Controlling what the customer sees based on url

I have an odd request. I am constructing an ecommerce solution for a client who embroiders and prints apparel, hats, and other items for other companies. They would like it so when their clients click a link on their homepage, it will take them to their own customized version of the store where they would only see categories and products related to their business--without seeing anyone else's products or categories.

I've been able to allow a store in the past, based on where the client enters from, apply a header and specific stylesheets so it gives a custom look and feeling. I know I can restrict (to a point) the client to what they can or cannot see by forcing them to register and login, but my client doesn't like that solution, as they don't want just anyone signing up for memberships and accessing certain products (in some instances, the companies they do apparel for have a couple thousand associates--so just not feasible to micro-manage the users).

What I really would like to know before I start reinventing the wheel, is if someone has already created an addon or another solution that would handle something like this. Just trying to keep the costs down for my client here if I can, as the only other solution I can think of beyond figuring out the code for myself, is to create a separate store for each company they do business with, but I feel that would create too much overhead. Thanks in advance to any responses!

can you just set this up with categories, use each company as the root category, then out thier products underneath. Then you can customise the look based on what root category (company) they are in.

No need for users to login etc,

Thanks for your reply amy. That's sort of the way I wanted to do it, and then based off how they got to the category (either a GET variable or http referrer) show only that category. But without either the GET variable or http referrer, then anyone can see any company's apparel, which the client doesn't want to happen if it can be prevented.

I hope that makes sense. If not I can try to say it a different way
