I have an X-Cart 4.1.9 store at the moment and the categories have IDs such as cat=1425.
X-Cart 5 does not use category IDs, it uses folders in the URL.
I want to make sure that all the old links I have in Google and Yahoo will still work after I upgrade to X-Cart 5.

That will be complicated, why are you not using the seo friendly urls out of interest? They are better for google to pick up the keywords in your categories.

You have to edit the .htaccess files and add custom rules to redirect visitors from the old "cat=xxx" URLs to the new ones.

Or you are to create a module for X-Cart 5 that allows you to specify the old URL for each category, and then redirects users from the old URLs automatically.
