um. excuse me for asking this dumb question.
When editin tpl files. is it possible to see the layout? like a GUI mode, or only in code format? I find out almost impossible to make any changes with coding alone, since i dont know codes. I tried the Dreamweaver extention thing for smarty, and all it does it it show up with little icons.

What is the proper way of editing tpl file? which software? or is it the only way to view changes are uploading the site?is there a way to view these changes locally?

No, there isn't a preview or GUI interface...you need to make the changes, save, see how it looks, go back, edit, save, etc.

Your best bet is to install a copy of your site in a test directory or on your local machine and make the edits there first, then upload them to the server when they are done correctly.

Also I can recommend you free PSPad editor which have PHP, SQL and Smarty multihighlighter. Also PSPad has FTP client which allows to download, edit and automatical upload files to server (as from local machine) and many other useful features. It's very convenient editor for X-Cart developer
