I'm looking for ways to consolidate the registration form when a user is checking out unregistered/logged in.

I can see why most retailors display both billing and shipping forms. But I don't quite see why "contact" and "billing" fields can't be combined. I know there is some fraud risk with separate billing and shipping addresses. But is it safe to assume that the shopper registering at checkout is going to pay for the items? I would think forcing this assumption may help reduce some CC fraud, no?

So if we assume that the billing profile and contact profile are, or should be, the same person/info, why not consolidate the field groups and eliminate the redundant fields? If done I'm sure it will yielld usability/conversion benefits, too.

Has anyone here done this, or know of someone who has?

Tips or links to posts on Contact/Billing form consolidation? How will the system be effected in I add the billing fields to contact where they post/store the same info?

One step at a laborious time... all help extremely greatly appreciated?

Next: the famous checkbox for autofilling shipping when "same as billing" is true!

You can turn on/off fields in General Settings/User Profiles options. I always combine the contact/personal info fields by editing customer/main/register.tpl and moving them one below the other. Then you go into main/register_personal_info.tpl and remove the header.

As for removing shipping, it is dangerous as people may want to ship to their work address or send a gift. Removing it may lose you some sales.

Curious only to see how this effects--or not--CC processing. Best I guess to maintain id/values for billing and consolidate redundant contact fields, right?

I saw a thread for replicating billing input to shipping fields... (on select condition) looked dated (2002ish) though. Sure fire 4.0.18 mod for this?

4.0.18 should say by default (Leave empty if same as billing) next to the shipping title. There is a mod for adding a checkbox, but I never was successful getiting it to work correctly.
