Default Don't want to give choice of shipping carrier, but give...

We are using flat rate shipping, and are using version 3.4.9 (for now anyway). We want to do the following (any advice is greatly appreciated):

1. Because the post office is cheaper and more convenient (because of our location) to send "some orders" (smaller packages anyway), we don't want the user be able to "pick" their carrier, but rather, we'll pick it ourselves based on the best rate.

2. We then want the customer to be able to track the package as normal, but using the carrier we chose.

We use FedEx on about 80% of our orders, so it's the default on our site, but of course when we enter a post office tracking number (so the customer can track it), it doesn't work. Is there a way to do this?

Our X-Cart site is not live yet, but in testing version 3.4.3, we are able to set up a shipment type called standard shipping(ground). Doing this along with flat rate shipping allows us to choose the shipment method. We also enter the web address of the shipper (eg. www.fedex.com) and the tracking number in the tracking field of admin. screen. Hope that helps.

Thank you, but I don't think your customers will be able to click the "Track Package" button and track it with a push of a button; that's what I'm kind of hoping I can do. Anyone?

I have shipping choices that specify speed, not carrier (basic, 3 day, 2 day, overnight) so I can use whatever is cheapest/best depending on the package size, weight and desitnation.

Funkydunk did a little mod for me so that the tracking area for the customer (when they log in to view an order) is now a text area, not a single text line. I can enter whatever info I want; kind of like a mini message board for the customer.

I enter notes on the order (using html) which allows me to put any tracking info in there I want. It's all manual - but since my orders have so many variables, it works for me.

For example, here's an entry in the "tracking info" for a recent order:

Proofs sent: 4/16 Shipped: 4/19</p> Click here to track your package.</p>

Doing it this way allows me to make any notes I might have for the customer, as well as list tracking info for any carrier I've chosen to use. It won't work for those of you that are more automated and use the shipping calculators, but if you do things manually maybe this will give you an idea.
