Other than editing the code directly, does anyone know of an add-on that can allow rule creation on a product. For instance, this product can only be sold in certain states so if you go to check out with that in your cart, it warns you that you will be unable to purchase it. Or, force the user to log in or register before adding something to the cart to run the check then so not to even add it to the cart if they are in a restricted state.

Not many ppl would like to register just to check on a price or shipping charge. How about instead to have a note on every product you want to restrict that this product is restricted in some way. At last checkout page you can do a check on the products in cart with an if statement and lets say hide the submit order button if restricted products exist in cart. By that time you will have the customers shipping info and you can perform that check

Thanks Steve, That is what I was thinking if there was no baked in admin tool to create rules. I agree with you on the requiring registration to do anything. That would turn me off too.

I need to restrict the sale of some of my products to some states, how did you solve this issue?

If you did create a script that can see if certain categories are in the shopping cart that were also being shipped to restricted areas and removed the checkout button and replaced it with a message... or something similar... I would be very interested in getting some help doing the same and would purchase the script if necassary, but I feel cabable to implement the script if you give me a quick "how to" along with the script you inserted.
