I'm trying to change the front page of the store in Webmaster mode, and whenever I make changes, my changes disappear when I'm done after I hit save and shut webmaster mode off.

Is it because I'm using the demo skin? And is there any free skins available that I can find to install and customize?

Please see the bugs forum, there are some patches in there for 4.2 bugs that you should apply (this being one of them)

Okay I got it working...kind of. Thanks for the input

Also, one last thing, is the template we get when we first buy X-Cart, the demo template, can we modify that and then take that live, or are we supposed to get an actual template (or are they called skins?) to use instead.

You are free to use the template(s) that come with x-cart the way they are or redesign them in any way you want. You can do it yourself, hire someone to do it for you or buy ready template from one of the vendors here
