By default you have to select "Advanced" (or something like that) to view the advanced search options, even though it doesn't save any loading time. To make the advanced search options available by default, comment the if and /if lines:

{*if $search_prefilled.need_advanced_options*}
{*/if*}


Edit one or more of these files to get the effect in the appropriate places of your store:

..\skin1\admin\main\users.tpl
..\skin1\customer\main\search_result.tpl
..\skin1\main\orders.tpl
..\skin1\main\popup_users.tpl
..\skin1\main\search_result.tpl
