how to edit left category table/area?

Default how to edit left category table/area?
i am sorry for a noobish question and also if i missed a post regarding this that may be here already, i have been searching for awhile. i am wondering how i would add store advertisements to my left table (underneath the category links there is a large blank area)?

i know how to add them, i am however not sure which file i am supposed to add the images to?
