In fooling around a little more with it, I’ve discovered that if I update anything to do with the product: description, alt tag for the image, etc. – anything that invokes the “Update Product” button in X-Cart. After clicking the “Update Product” button, if the first thing I do is click “remove background” Malabi will remove the background from image (I can see it under the grayed out area) and I get the “Background removed successfully. Uploading resulting image” pop up message. Unfortunately, I have the spinning “circle” gif and the image never updates on the site.
