Sorry, that task is a little over my head. The variants data already exists behind the scenes in product.tpl - so all we had to do was display it nicely. The products.tpl page doesn't contain this data, so the job would involve some more serious tweaking - probably in /products.php. Anyone else willing to take a crack at this?
