A nice, quick response via a bug ticket for this has confirmed that XC 5.3.4.4 (so by definition: & all previous releases) will not yet run properly on PHP 7.2.
Useful for anybody possibly about to implement PHP 7.2 on their server. Updates and future advice will be advised by XC
