i have two ways around that problem.

If you still have dreamweaver 4 you can use it for your tpl's.
it gives WYSIWYG. (make sure dreamweaver doesn't rewrite tpl in preferences)

somehow this got lost in MX or i never found it, but what i do now
is just copy the tpl in CODE-VIEW then create a new htm-file delete
all in CODE-VIEW and paste the tpl-content.

now you have WYSIWYG untill you save the file that is!
Writing this down it looks like a lot of work but it realy isn't.
