Spend some time getting familar with which templates are which and try some simple edits using the CSS file first, and then try editing some layouts. Before posting questions in the forum, use the search feature and read through some previous posts to answer your questions. You will find that most of the questions with regards to template editing have already been asked and answered.

Also, FYI, you don't need to know PHP if you are just editing layout and graphics, that is plain old HTML with some Smarty tags sprinkled in. You don't need to touch the PHP files unless you want to change functionality.
