I am interested in this functionality too.. it seems like it should be something that is available out of the box but i cant figure out how to do it in 4.0.
Currently, the product thumbnail is auto-resized down for the category display(which is good) but I dont like the way it ends up looking. id rather there was an option to upload different sized thumbails as seperate files
