How do I enter a script before the </head> tag in XCART 5.x.x?

I found the </head> tag: /default/en/header/body.tpl

However, entering the script crashes the site.

I need to paste a script into the website's HTML source code before the closing </head> tag. The script embeds Zendesk support options on the site.

The code needs to remain even after XCART version updates.

Or, do I need to do this by creating some sort of module that adds the script to the site? If so, how does someone with limited coding experience go about it?
