You posted that you are running 5.1.11 but is that using the normal skin and using the default view on a mobile or, using a purchased mobile skin or something else......
The instructions in the X-cart link that you followed definitely do work ( we used it on 5.1.11 ourselves and am guessing many others have too )
If you haven't got it to work, there will be a basic reason, but you'll need to post more info to allow people to help you
