Thanks for the suggestion, Tony.

After I removed and then re-installed the module, the box has vanished completely.

I did try to inspect the element when it was visible and it was simply an empty div.

Now I'm really at a loss as I cannot find that div anywhere in the page code. I even tried to install a fresh version of X-cart 5.1.2 in a temp directory and the webmaster mode on that install is also broken.
