It has been highlighted to me that my site's redirect from the secure version of a page to the non-secure version isn't as clean as I once thought.
When going from https:// to http:// like everyone else I thought that the move was like: https://www.mydomain/page/ to http://www.mydomain/page/ via redirect 301 but what actually happens takes place over three steps:
- https://www.mydomain/page/ 302: Temporary redirect to http://www.mydomain/page?xid_98734=<hex number>
- http://www.mydomain/page?xid_98734=<hex number> 301: Permanent redirect to http://www.mydomain/page/?xid_98734=<hex number>
- http://www.mydomain/page/?xid_98734=<hex number> 302: Temporary redirect to http://www.mydomain/page/
Since the intermediate pages are blocked to search engines I'm not sure this will actually cause any problems?
