i got my shopping cart set up but its too basic looking. (THANKS FOR THE HELP EVERYONE)

i found the files that relate to each button but im unable to open them. what program(s) or how do i edit a .tpl file? also how can edit my .php files? step by step would help a beginer like me thanks again.
