It does exactly what you need, basically has been developed for exactly same purpose you mentioned.
As to list of products - we use concept of "datasources", which can contain "suggested", "similar", "new from date of previous order" and few other lists of products that you may use in your emails.
You can develop your own datasources (or we can do for you) that may match your exact situation, however using datasources will be just enough.
