You are permitted to install a test store into a test directory -- and you should.
In fact, if you do anything to your live store while it's running, you are asking for trouble.
The way I tested the shadowbox integration is:
1) get shadowbox working on a plain html page (totally unrelated to xcart)
2) learn how to configure shadowbox on the plain html page
3) the rest is pretty simply smarty stuff.
But you really should install a test store -- don't do a subdomain, as you may have copy protection issues... and whatever you do, BLOCK ALL ACCESS to it from anyone besides your IP. Use htaccess.
PS -- didn't I say I was going to slap the first person who asked if this was compatible with 4.2?
