You have a custom template, so it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what templates to guide you to - which is where Webmaster Mode comes in handy. Open up your site in that, it will show you exactly which template is which - and then you can easily remove/move/edit items in that template.
Can you give me an example of some of the code you are editing, and what error you are getting?
