I don't use this particular free mod, but I use a paid version instead, so I can't really check it out for you, but you must be missing one of the steps...

Especially verify STEP 3:

Copy newproducts.php file to {xcart_dir}/
Example: /store/newproducts.php

And Verify STEP 5:

Edit: store/skin1/customer/home_main.php

{include file="customer/main/newproducts.tpl"}
{else}
{include file="common_templates.tpl"}
{/if}
